Default Runnin' wire up the chimney?

My wife wants a Nutone heater in the bathroom which requires a dedicated 20 amp 120v circuit. I live in a center fireplace cape style house. Can I run the wire up the space between the chimney and the framing from the basement to the attic without it being attached to anything solid until it gets upstairs? If not, would I run conduit for this circuit?

Yep, this is one popular path for getting a cable from the basement to the attic. Along the sewer vent pipe is another popular path.
