garage floor drain

WG, Neighbor has attached single garage attached to new home. A floor drain was installed with piping exiting outside on hillside. She is now having problems with auto snow melt and drain pipe freezing.(unheated) I'M wondering your feeling's on fishing a Gutter Heating cable in that pipe. If so do they make or have this cable where you can get just length needed, rather than excess 10' zig zagging on side of hill? Have not looked yet but assume to be PVC and possibly 2' pipe? Ty -25 here now to cold to look.

Your floor drain should come out of your foundation below freeze line below finished grade. In this area that is 30". I would drain your garage floor into a D box and provide a couple of fingers to allow seepage into the earth all below freeze line of hte earth. Then you won't have the freezing problem and should never have to worry again about this freezing problem. If you must have the drain where it will freeze then you need to insulate that pipe and install gutter heaters to prevent the freezing clear to the outlet point. You may buy different lengths of the gutter heaters to fit your needs.

Best option is to create a minor drainage disposal finger system with a D box and a couple of fingers. Then if you want to get better at it then you can tie in your other gray waters to that drain line and plant a high water usage set of plants and flowers as a planter area over the finger system that will obsorb the excess water and have a pretty well watered flowered area.
