Default Toilet rough in

I am replacing my toilet in the master bath. I have found that my rough in space (distance from wall not baseboard, to the mounting bolts) is exactly 11 & 1/4 inches. The previous toilet apparently was a 12" that was firmly butted (absolutely no space between the wall and tank) against the wall. I realize there are 10" toilets available that would fit nicely. However, the toilet I really want is made only in 12". I had the company (Toto) send me installation instructions. The diagram clearly shows that there will be 3/4" open space between the wall and tank based on a 12" rough in. Given the space I have to work with, I should have no margin for error, thus the new toilet will also butt up to the wall. This is OK with me. If somehow this is not the case (the toilet doesn't fit) what can I do to get an extra 1/4" of space to work with? Opening the floor and moving the flange is not an option as I would have to break up a stone tile floor.

Please advise, Micheal

Boy you took away all the options !

My guess is that the 1/4" won't make much problem. The wax ring is rather forgiving in such a matter. Try it even if a hair off. Often times the wax ring will make up the difference.

If all else fails they say if the dog won't come to you then go to the dog and beat the !!!! out of it. Just kidding. If you can't move the toilet and you tried being off a bit and found a leaking seal then remove the drywall behind the thoilet trim back the stud about one inche then install a piece of paneling and trim to finish. This will allow your tank to inset into the wall what you need to get your 1/4" and then some.

Just an idea or two.

Good Luck and let us know how you come out.
