Default Finishing Storage Rooms in Basement

Posted by: ssabin (old forum transfer)

I am in the process of building 2 storage rooms in my basement, one to store wine, the other to hide my water softener and store a small amount of odds and ends.

I plan on insulating the walls of both rooms, but I am wondering if code requires that I put up drywall (or at least some sort of finished wall) on the inside of these rooms? I imagine if there is a requirement, it be some sort of fire requirement.

Storage areas are considered as unfinished areas. No wall covering is required in unfinished areas of basements or garages. If an area is a living area then the walls would be required finished with a wall covering. In your case the IBC or the CABO neither requires any wall covering in storage or work [non living ] areas.

Good Luck
