Washer will not spin dry

I have a Maytag Neptune washer dryer and the washer does not seem to be spinning during the spin cycle. The most common posts that I have seen say that it could be a fill, drain or door lock problem. I have checked that the washer fills properly and it does, it then has no trouble draining the wash tub. If I put it on "spin," the door lock light comes on and the door does physically lock as I cannot open it; however, no spinning occurs. Are there belts on these washers? It sounds as if the washer is trying to spin but nothing happens. Any help would be great.

No model# posted but most do yes....a broken or "off" belt would prevent the tumbling/washing from occuring as well.

It sounds as if the washer is trying to spin but nothing happens
