I'm planning to install porcelain tile over the existing concrete entryway at my friend's house. The existing entryway is made up of two slabs, about 35 sq. ft each, separated by a control joint. I'm wondering how to handle the control joint. I'm not planning on bridging the joint - I just want to minimize it's appearance to blend it into the rest of the work. I plan to bring full tiles up to the joint on either side leaving a 1/4" gap which coincides with the 1/4" grout lines in the rest of the project. I had planned on using colored caulk which is available from the grout manufacturer in colors which match the grout, however I noticed that this caulk is not approved for exterior applications. Also, I'm wondering how to deal with any unevenness between the two slabs at the control joint. Would it be okay to cover the joint with a floor leveling compound and score the joint back into the compound?
