Can you staple two Romex wires (snugly but not damaging either, of course) together with one staple. To set the wires far enough back on the stud from the wall, this seemed like a good idea, rather than side by side. Now, just before inspection, I'm suddenly not so sure.

Some staples are approved for one cable, and some two. Check the manufacturers instructions.

Q "If the staple was not designed for two wires (although it was long enough to easily hold two wires securely without pinching them at all) is it the kind of thing that, in your experience, would be cause for failing inspection?"

A: Some inspectors are more picky than others. Could go either way.
