View Full Version : Question on eaves troughes

I have 2 levels of rooves on my house. The original roof over the second story, and a second roof when an addition was added in 1972. The top roof has eaves which drain at both sides, through downspouts, and then onto the lower roof. That water drains straight down the roof into eaves on the edge of the roof. There are 2 downspouts from there to the ground. One one side, it drains about 3 feet away from the house into a hedge. On other other, it simply comes down and empties onto the driveway. Is this normal? The problem is that the previous owner used to park his car in the same spot, making 2 nice long depressions. I can fix those with cold patch (tip from a previous post) so that they no longer collect water, but the eaves still drain directly onto the driveway.

What do most people do? I don't really have much choice on that side because there is nothing but driveway. I could close up the eaves opening so that it only drains on the one side, but that is probably a bad idea. There are trees all over the place so I am constantly cleaning them out. I could also run the driveway downspout under the back roof overhand, and have 2 come down on the hedge side, but that would probably look really ugly.

Is it normal to use the driveway as a means to drain water off of the house?

Thanks,
Bruce

A concrete driveway would be perfect in this situation. However it sounds like you hav an asphalt driveway which, over time can develope ruts and actually collect and pond water.

One option is to re-direct the water to a different portion of your roof, however you don't want to overload your troughs.
Another option would be to lengthen the downspout extension such that the water will discharge at a point that would not allow it to collect on your driveway.
