Hi, I would like to replace my current overhead garage door with a pair of hanging doors. The opening is 12 feet, so i am going to have 3 ft walls on each side and then in the middle two 3 ft hanging doors. I am OK with the carpentry aspect of the project, but have no clue about the hanging door hardware. Which type should i use? What do I need? And how do I do it? LOL ! Any advise, help or instructions would be greatly appreciated! Is the a good website that would explain how to do it? Thanks.

From a more personal standpoint, I am somewhat worried that a fella that's disabled with back troubles might be better served by hiring this work done.
Do you have a Tractor Supply Company, or Central Tractor in your area? They have all that hardware there, since overhead sliding doors are most common on agricultural buildings. You won't find a very big selection of that kind of stuff at Lowe's or Homo Depot.

So you want to reduce the opening of your garage to 6' in width?
I'd swing by your farm hardware store (do you have Tractor Supply's out your way?). Larger hardware stores may have heavy enough hardware too. Dont skimp on the hardware, it sounds like these doors could get alot of use. Undesized hardware will make them sag and drag in time. One of the doors should latch to the header and threshold (make sure you secure in both places for stength and stability, and the other door can latch to the now stationary door.
If the barn look is not needed, you may want to consider 36" french style doors, you will get the same width, better weatherproofing and security, much less to mess with during installation.

Hi, first of all Mrshunk, thanks for your concearn! I am not going to be doing the actual physical labor, thats what sons are for!!! Besides can't really afford Hiring someone to do it for me. Being the job forman, I want to know how to do this before my "I know everything" sons try to tell me how to do it!! LOL I do have a Tractor supply store close by, as well as many Feed/hardware stores. (I am in the middle of dairy country in central ny) So I will try one of those. And I am sure any local farmer at the feed stores would be glad to explain it to me. Again, thanks for your concearn and thanks for the Ideas.

You might want to look at the hardware from Tek Supply. They have stainless steel for real agricultural uses. www.teksupply.com
