black pipe in ground

I live in the Chicago area and I wanted to know if I can bury black gas pipe in the ground? If I can do I need to protect it form rusting? I do know you need di-electric fittings for before the ground and that. The pipe is only going a few feet from my house to my pole barn and I really want to have to get a pulmber to come out a pay a whole bunch on money to run like 10-15ft for plastic in the ground. They will laugh at me. I am pretty sure the line still going in my house is steel and has not been replaced yet and it has been going 30 years. If the new lines lastes 20 years I would be happy.

steel pipe must be wrapped in vynal tape when used underground. Gas pipe must be sized according to BTU/H usage.
