There is a patch about 7' x 6" across the top of my garage door that is rotted out. It is not siding, rather the face is just flat panel. I am thinking of cutting this section out and replacing with plywood and painting to match the rest of the house. Here's the question(s):

What do you suggest the best method is to conceal the seam where the plywood meets the original?
Any alternative ideas for teh project overall?

Jeeze... I'd probably start by fixing whatever water/moisture issue caused this rot in the first place. Rot doesn't spontaneously occur without some sort of water/moisture intrusion issue.

YOu need a rain Z shield between the original siding and the plywood to ensure water does not rot it again. Then I would install a trim board over the old and new overlapping to hide the sheild and seem making it look like it was made to be there. Just pick a type trim board that would match up or be compatible to the trims already on your home.

Hope this helps

The rotten patch in question is just over the garage door where there a small lip that apparently water lays. It also appears that the previous owner (I've been in the house jus shy of 2yrs) didn't keep up on their caulking in this case.

Thanks for the tips fellas.

Wg,
I tackled this project last week and the good news was that there was/is a z shield in place. So just the surface was rotten. I cut that away. Replaced it with plywood and feathered the joint with wood filler. Finally, I primed and painted the whole thing to where you can't see the difference between the patch and original.

One last thing, i caulked around all the seams to stop the moisture from re-entering. I think I'm good to go now.
