going to be tearing off and redoing the roof on my garage.
about 450 sq. ft. of shingles needed. Pitch is about 40-45 degrees.
2 layers of shingles on it now that will be removed along with tar paper.
i live in upstate new york so probably have to put on ice dam paper too, correct? even though the garage is detached from the house and is not heated/insulated?
any advice is greatly appreciated.
ALSO........ this is my first time doing roofing and since i am only going to have 1 or 2 other guys helping me, i was told it would take 1 day to strip the old shingles off and clean it up so i am thinking of stripping the back side first and laying new shingles there before i start stripping the front side. This way, the whole roof is not stripped at once. Any advice?

I would try to strip the whole thing at once. 3 guys should be able to strip the whole roof, clean up the nails and tar paper in a single day.
The tar paper will protect it from the rain while you are roofing the rest. Just put a lot of staples where the wind gets at it.
If the roof is 45 degrees I would make sure i aquired some roof jacks beforehand.
If you can borrow some scaffolding, I also find that useful for working on the first four feet of the roof/ staging the roofing material if your hand hauling it.
I don't know the local code on Ice Dams. It sounds like you already know the whole heated/unheated concept. It seems to me that an Ice dam on an unheated structure with that kind of pitch is a bit of overkill, but oh well.
One thing I would be carefull of is how I transitioned the shingles into the gutter. -make sure that the snow will fall off and not be backed up by the gutter.
My two cents

how many sets of roof jacks should i get?
roof is about 16' wide by 14' high at 45 degrees roughly.
how do you remove these jacks when done?
should i tear off the ridge last incase i dont shingle the whole thing before it rains?
how long can the felt paper sit on roof for before shingles are installed?
anyone know about how much a nail gun is to rent per day?

You could use 2 sets 8' plank. If you use 4 sets then you won't have to move them as often. If you have access to scaffolding that would make getting started a lot easier.
Use a long enough nail and nail your jack into a rafter were the nail will be covered by the shingle tab. The ones I have you slot for the jack to slid onto the nail. when I finished I lifted the shingle tab, slid out the jack, nail the nail down completely. The shingle tab should cover that nail to prevent leaking.
The paper is there to protect the roof sheathing. If you have tears in the paper you don't want to have water getting in and ruining the sheathing.

the simple solution to that question would be ;why not just call your local rental service and ask them, that way you will get 'first hand' and EXACT advice.
savvy?

they want $33 per day, since i wont get the whole thing done in a day, i will just use hammer and nails. will take longer but save money.
