I have a small Craftsman Jointer that has surface rust on the tabletop. Can anyone give anyone advice on how to take the rust off and keep it from forming again?

To remove the rust, you might try spraying some WD-40 on it and scrubbing with a scotchbrite or steel wool. Just, don't let the muck get into any of the moving parts. I have always used paste wax (like Johnson's) on table saw tops. Do not use a wax with silicone (many automotive waxes). The silicone will get on the wood and cause problems with finishing. They finish will fisheye.

You can spray it down well with WD-40 and then use a sander with some med sandpaper to clean the rust off. Wipe it down well with paper towels or rags. To keep it rust free, I use a spray called "T-9" made by B.A.S.F, Woodworker Supply carrys it. It coats the top and works very well. You can also cover the Jointer with an old cloth bath towel when not in use. I use the "T-9" on all my tools as my shop stays damp and it stop all my rusting problems.
