I am getting ready to put ceramic tile down in my kitchen, DR, baths & entrance. My home was built in the early 60s. It is a concrete slab, and there are a number of cracks in the slab, but most are 1/16" or less and at the same level (no settling). This is my first time doing ceramic tile, and most of what I have read about cracks and floor prep seems like it is referring to larger cracks. To me it seems that if the cracks are no larger than this after 40+ years that if I patch them with the stuff I am using to level the floor that putting an isolation barrier down on top of that would be overkill. Any opinions on this?

Use a product called Versa bond flex thin set for your base.
Follow the directions on the bag. This is a little more expensive than the other stuff but is good for potentially flexible locations.
You set your tile right into the thin set, then grout.
