I have a briggs 14.5 hp mower and it will only start with a charger on the battery. It has a new battery and I had it tested but the motor turns over but real slow and then stops. Any ideas????

Check your negative wire at both ends.

i had the same problem, this may not help , but there is a clutch switch close to the clutch under the frame. check it and see if it is bent and not making a good connection when you push the clutch in.

When it messes up on you does it turn the flywheel a little bit and makes a little noise? I am a John Deere Tech and we have had some problems the last three to four years of Briggs engines not turn over due to the compression release not made properly at factory. We have had to re-adjust the rocker arms/valves to .001 to .003. When it happens again turn the flywheel by hand to get it off of the compression stroke and then try it again. Let me know what happens.

kdsdude may be right. Also I have seen people buy a new battery and decide to save money buying a battery that is too small to do the job. Check the amp rating of your battery then check with your owner's manual to see that amp rating equals or exceeds the required amp rated size of battery the manufacturer recommends. A battery that is too small to do the job will do the exact same thing as you discribe also.

Good point by the moderator. Is the battery big enough to do the job?
Has the starter motor gone bad?
Is there oil in the engine?
I hate asking the question, but you would be amazed at the number of units I have personally seen either low or out of oil.

MrT now that was funny. I reacted to the recent post and didn't look to see the original post date. Guess we had fun posting to a mower now wore out and traded in, hee hee.
