i was just throwing this idea around after i felled a beautiful shagbark hickory tree to clear for a drive. it is about 14" in diameter, and approx 40' to the first limb, straight as an arrow.

i am about to begin construction on a carport off the side of my home, just big enough for 2 vehicles side by side.

if i was to use this hickory tree as the corner supports:

-how should i treat it? as in chemical protection..
-what would be the best method of base for it? (i would think it would rot quickly if placed directly in concrete)
-dont you think it would look better than plain old 4X4's?

Click Here (http://www.alsc.org/greenbook%20collection/ps20.pdf) to view the Standard that pertains to softwood lumber. It establishes standard sizes and requirements for development and coordination of the lumber grades of the various species, the assignment of design values when called for, and the preparation of grading rules applicable to each species. It establishes principal trade classifications and lumber sizes for yard, structural, factory and shop use. It further states...When nonstandard grades, sizes, or patterns are specified, or when particular provisions of a standard grade are waived or changed, inspection shall be made accordingly... So you may want to contact your local "COUGH"authority"COUGH" if you have one.

Building codes do not permit the use of lumber that is not stamped by a recognized lumber grading agency except where an engineer approves it for use.

No choice but to get the approval of the code authorities for this one, especially if the carport will be attached to the main structure.

Hickory is not approved as a naturally rot resistant lumber and would not be allowed to be in contact with soil or concrete or usually within about 8" from grade.

If you want it for the look, why not get it cut up (good luck getting it to the sawmill) into 1x stock and cover whatever supports you are going to use with it. You'll get the same effect. If you dont want the rest of the tree, and its as good as you say it is, they may even trade it for the saw time you need.
