hi-
have some weird looking thinks that i think are phone jacks around the baseboards of my house. they are circular grey things, each having 4 holes in them. These holes, which are no bigger than a pinhead, are arranged like this:

any idea what these things are?

Old phone jacks. If they are active you can get a adaptor to plug in a regular phone, or you can replace with a modern surface mount or wallplate jack. Inside you will see 4 wires attached, you only need the red and green with todays phones. I would replace the jacks. We had those at our hosue when we moved in, and every one of the adaptors had corrosion in them creating poor connections.

Phone jacks are much bigger and a pin. They are more the size of toothpick.
