craftsman 12.5 snowblower need help with augers

my problem is in the gear box don t know how to check it front auger want turn shear pins are good . its a 12.5 hp craftsman snowblower . im talking about gear box on the front auger . belt is good brand new

please help

the model no. is 950528120 12.5 hp with a 33 in. cut

Anymore numbers on that model number? Sears doesnt find that model number in a search, does it have 3 smaller numbers in front of it? If so we need them too.

Sears still don't find that number. Where on the snowblower did you find this number? According to sears it should be either on the chain gaurd, or on the main housing right hand rear.

its on chain guard might because it is a canadian model

Don't forget clutches and cables. On many snow blowers you pull a handle to engage the augers and this is connected by a cable to a clutch linkage. If (quite often happens) the cable becomes loose and will not pull the clutch completely closed or will not pull the belt tight and then you don't get auger action.

If you open up the housing where the belt is located, usually you can see all of the mechanical workings including clutches. Disconnect the spark plug cables, engage the auger, and have someone else pull the starter cord or turn on the ignition as you observe everything turn or not turn correctly.

To prove (if you didn't already) that the gear box in front is faulty, you need to see the lengthwise shaft coming out to it turning while the augers are not turning (requires several revolutions of the lengthwise shaft). It isn't easy to put a little piece of tape on that shaft as a marker without getting your hands amongst the blades which you should not do.

AllanJ, it sounds like you know what you're talking about, so I was wondering if you might comment on a similar problem:

I ran over the woodpile tarp buried in the snow. Oops. The tarp wrapped around an auger, which stopped its rotation. The shear pin did not break; it bent. I'll have to cut it off to get it out, but that's not the problem.

After clearing the augers, it would't throw much snow, and climbed up the pile pushed in front of it. My wife confirmed that once the augers engaged snow they stopped.

Ok, the belts are a bit ratty, and ought to be replaced, however, prior to the event they threw snow. I can turn the augers by hand, even with the clutch engaged (spark plug disconnected!) so if I add all this up correctly, it's in the front gear box.

Shouldn't the augers be rather tough to rotate?
Is there any likelihood of putting one of these gearboxes back together presuming one can get the parts? No 40 ton press fits or stuff you can't do with a tub of grease and a couple wrenches?
