We bought this 1865 vintage house for a reno. job last year, it is finished now, I was just going through some pictures and found this one., I figured it would give a few of you a laugh. This was an addition to the back of the house to the left is a half bath. The bath was supported by a cinder block on on side to help keep it level. The wires you see were all live and many were chewed open by rats (which I found many, most dead). The owner even told me "Don't touch the wires, you will get a tingly feefing if you do" !!!!
The Feed for this "addition" was taken into the basement and fed directly into the front of the electrical panel (no cover on it)
He proudly told me that he did all the work and he couldn't possibly see what needed renovating here or anywhere else in the house.
You should see this house now!!
Anyway, shake your head, laugh or cry, it amazes me more people aren't killed.

Looks like something out of Toledo :D
There is a 'nightmare' forum on here now. just a FYI.
I looked at a house that had extention cords (the small white ones your plug your table lamps into) mudded into the walls. Probably the same 'proud' person. "Hey.. we got a extra outlet for the microwave now, and raidant wall heat at the same time....The thermostat is built into the microwave... The room will be warm by the time your food is done"

I rented an "Apt" - 3rd floor of a triple decker
One circuit, fridge, toaster oven, & hot plate - that was my kitchen
Plus the TV, stereo were all on the same circuit
The far room had lamp cord wire used to extend to the outlets
Good thing I only used lights in that room
I ran a 2nd circuit & replaced the lamp cord wire
Then checked out the rest of the knee wall areas for problems
Landlord gave me a free month's rent

It's kind of a double edge sword but that's why many towns don't allow homeowners to pull permits to do their own work. Presumably they think that if the homeowner is not allowed to do it, they won't.
You can think of what you found as right of passage to DIY homeownership. You haven't dug deep enough until you find the outlets connected with lamp-cord.
Happy Holidays everyone.

hey, how did you get that picture of my bathroom remodel?
just kidding.
What do you tell a guy like that? Good job? Bad job? or do you just let his ignorance be the death of him?
I am not sure if i want to laugh or cry.:smokin:

Just curious, did you end up having to redo all the framing as well. that looks pretty goofy as well. Sometimes it just feels like justice to rip it all out.
