I have recently had an alarm installed using the DSC 5501Z keypad. There was only one keypad installed when the company put it in. I have found the desire to have an additiona keypad. The company wanted $125 for another keypad. I purchased the same model new in the box off an auction site for considerably less.

My question is what do I need to know about installing this keypad to work in conjunction with my alarm. What type wire to buy and any considerations that need to be made. The alarm monitors 5 windows and 3 doors.

I hope this isn't too vague, but I have to start somewhere. If you need more specifics let me know.

Thanks,
Moteaux

I would start first buy reading the manual.

You should be able to find it somewhere. You may not be able to add it without the installer code.

Thanks... and normally I would say you were correct. The only manual the installer company left me was a manual that described operating the keypad. The new one that I purchased of the auction site may have some more information with it that they didn't leave me when they installed my system. I will just have to see when it gets here, I was just trying to get a headstart on familiarizing myself with what to do.

Brian, I received the keypad that I purchased and have been reading about it. For programming, it always mentions installer code. Is there no way around this at all? I am guessing regular entry/exit code is not sufficient?

Additionally, the manual mentions partitions. I have a simple home alarm ( I would think) currently with 5 windows monitored and 3 doors monitored. Would this have partions normally or how would I figure that out?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Randy

Well your really out of luck. You can try to get the programming code from them. Did you buy it or you leasing it?

Most likly it is not partioned. Partions are usually for bigger setups.

Your not reading the installer manual only the user manual.

Give me your model number of the panel and email by PM.

I think I can get you the manual but it won't do you any good without the installers code.

Well, upon further thought, I figured that the box/panel was the brain of my alarm. The keypad at the carport door was only that, a keypad communicating to the panel by 22 gauge 4 conductor wire. All the memory and functions were in the panel. Why wouldn't the additional keypad be just like adding an additional phone jack. So I ran the wire and powered the system back up and all is good!!!

Now if I add sensors to my shop and a keypad there, I may need the code to figure partitions etc..
