For anyone using their fireplace this winter that uses inside house air for combustion:

Open a NEARBY WINDOW, some, to allow that as the source for combustion air. This way you are not drawing fresh air in from throughout the entire house, cooling down the far reaches of the house!! I never have ever thought about that one, and this makes sense!

sounds about right.... like adding a cold air return??? I work in a power plant making power with Gas Turbines.... the colder the air, the better efficiency we have and more power we produce..... makes sence... maybe i need to add a air inlet.....

Not exactly like adding a cold air return. More like adding sealed combustion to your furnace, where you draw in fresh outside air, directly to the furnace burners, rather than pulling already heated room air into the burners and have it get wasted to the outisde, out your flue/chimney. This makes even MORE sense.

I had one of those King free standing stove/fireplaces in my Texas house and I wish I had thought about that then. We always felt cool drafts when the stove was going, due to the rush of room air trying to enter where the logs were burning. If I had opened a window back behind the stove, opposite the living area, THAT air would have went into the stove to be used for oxygen, rather than the rest of the house air, that I was trying to heat.

I have a wood stove and it came with an air supply kit, Luck for me I have a two story house and the fire place is on the top floor. So I ran the duct work out the back of the house. So when I use the fire place I Dont have any more leaky windows or electric outlets. I have seen some people cut a hole in the floor in front if the fire place so it will get the air from the closes source, but if you dont have a open front on your fire box this wount work.
Good luck
