Hi,

Im new here....my name is Don, I have a 1985 Mercury Cougar 3.8L V6 and Im having a problem with it...At the moment, my car keeps dying out...me and my dad are trying to guess what it is with no luck so far...every time I start it, it chuggs along like its about to staul or something, then it dies out...at the moment I cant even get it out of park without it dying, to keep it going I have to have the pedal on the floor. So anyways...I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of what it would be.

Thanks in advance

Probably a carb engine. May need a tuneup or a good cleanout.
Check the obvious first, Air filter, PCV valve, plugs/wires/cap/rotor, choke...

Will it idle or run at low speeds when it's warmed up?

IS your weather getting colder there? Did the problems start then?

Hi thanks for your reply

In terms of a tune up I have already changed the air filter, pcv valve, cap/rotor, wire set a while ago...It has been getting a little colder, but it has been doing this for a while, just not as bad as it is now...I have yet to test it to see if its the fuel pump, im doing that tomorrow, hopefully I can find out soon
