I'm still remodeling my house. It's a single story 1300 sq. ft house built on a slab foundation. I'm currently finishing up the kitchen and I want to enlarge the window. My sink is on an outside wall; the window is above it. The sink drain has a vent that complies with UPC: it runs vertically from the drain up to a height of 6" above the flood level of the sink; the vent then turns and runs horizontally until it reaches the vent that terminates on the roof. No other drain or fixture is served by this vent. The window sill is just above the horizontal section of the vent.
I want to enlarge the window, increasing its overall height and lowering the sill to the level of the sink and countertop. If i do this, the horizontal portion of the vent can no longer be 6" above the flood level of the sink; it will have to be below it. I've talked to two plumbers who shook their heads; so I looked it up in the UPC (the governing code here).
The UPC seems to allow me to move the vent down as necessary to clear the window; the applicable section, 905.3, begins: "Unless prohibited by structural considerations, each vent shall rise to a point not less than 6" above the flood level rim ..." and ends: "... vents less than 6" above the flood level rim ... shall be installed with approved drainage fittings, material and grade to the drain."
I would greatly appreciate it a professional's opinion on this, before I take my plans to the building department here. And, is flat grading acceptable, or 1/4" per foot, or some other?
Thanks
Dave
