I have posted acouple topics about this in the past but i will tell the whole story.
I am currently having my whole upstairs remodeled. A friend of mine is doing most of the work and an insulation company is coming in and insulating the whole upstairs.
Mu buddy is almost done reframing all the walls upstairs and is about to start all the electrical and plumbling work, after that he will install the bathroom fixtures and after the insulation is installed, he is going to drywall the whole thing, after that, the rest of the finshing work is up to me.
It is a cape cod built in 1948. The dormer was installed on the rear(not sure how long ago).
There is a gable vent at each peak end of the house, 2 roof vents at the upper front of the house, soffits along the front but not along the back top of dormer. I am going to install the small soffits vent peices myself but probably not til next spring due to not having time with work and school right now.
I want to get up on the house and clean out the gable and roof vents. the birds were making nests in the roof vents all summer and they are filled with grass and other nest makings.
Now once the drywall is installed, i wont be able to tell where the rafter are along the rear of the dormer where the soffits need to be installed. How will i be able to figure out where they are in the spring?
They will be installing 3-1/2" installation on all the walls and 12" in the ceiling except back near where the dormer and the rear wall of the house meet due to the roof angle. They will be putting baffles along all the sloped walls and dormer to keep the insulation away.
How do you take the roof vents off from the top of the house?
I also think the gable vents may be clogged so i am hoping i can remove them from the outside and clean them also, does anyone know how they detach?

Any help or added advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The gable vents were usually just like setting a window pre made and slide into place with finish nails holding the assembly in place.

The roof vents are installed before the shingles just nailed to the roof decking then shingled up to and over the lip. YOu will probably have to pull the nails on the roofing to lay them back then pull the vent out then once the vents are cleaned or replaced reset the roofing back in place using roof dope [tar] to reseal any unused nail holes found under the laps of the roofing.

I would replace the roof vents with a newer design that will not invite the birds to nest there. Just an idea.

Good Luck
