View Full Version : how do you wire baseboard heaters in parallel?

I am creating two new circuits for baseboards heaters in my home. I figured out that I can put three on a 240V/20A circuit and the other two I can place on a 30A or a 20A circuit. I'm inclined to use a 30A circuit for the 2nd one to leave room for other 20A circuits, but theoretically I could use the 20A.

I'd like to wire both circuits in parallel. How do I do it? If I ran a cable from the breaker box to a junction box and then spliced the cable to the 3 heaters would be that be in parallel?

Most baseboard heaters are 220 volt rated.

Make sure your heaters and thermostats are rated for 30 amp before you install them on a 30 amp circuit. If your heaters and thermostats are rated to connect to 30 amp and you opt for a 30 amp circuit then you will need to install 10/2wGrnd if protected by a 30 amp 240 volt breaker.

If you wish to run a 20 map circuit 240 volt rated serving two thermostats each controlling heaters on each thermostat in different rooms for example then you would run a 12/2wGrnd from your panel to the first thermostat box. Then run a 12/2wGrnd from that first thermostat to the second thermostat. This would be a power in power out from one thermostat to the second thermostat. You would wire nut both blacks in that first thermostat box with a 6" pigtail of black wire to the thermstat from that wire nut. Do the same with the white wire in that thermostat box as well as the same thing with the bare wire in that thermostat box. This way you have the 20 amp 240 volt branch circuit directly from the panel to each thermostat box.

Then run a 12/2wGrnd from the load side of each thermostat to the one or more heaters again if more than one heater on one thermostat control then run a 12/2wGrnd cable from first heater to second heater extending the thermostat controlled cable from heater to heater. All wire nutting can be done in thermostat box and inside heater connection boxes on heaters.

Hope this helps
