I understand how to wire a circuit with 2- 3 way switches and a 4 way switch in the middle. how do the wires go between 4-way switches when you want more than 1 4-way in a circuit? ie. 4 switches in total.

Just keep adding 4-ways between the two 3-way switches. You can go forever with 4-way switches. All these do is criss-cross the travelers. So you need two travelers coming into the switch and two travelers going out to the other 4-way or 3-way. If the neutral is going with the travelers, just tie the inbound and outbound neutrals together. You'll need 14-3 or 12-3 coming into and going out of each additional 4-way you add.
