View Full Version : 220V Table Saw & Planer connection to a dryer receptacle

This may seem like a stupid question about my situation but here it is anyways...

My situation:
I just purchased a planer & table saw that are set up to run on 220V. I have these items in an attached garage that has a 3 110V outlets and an unused 220V/30A dryer receptacle.

I want to use the table saw and planer as soon as possible.

The table saw currently has what looks to be a 6-15 plug on it and the planer has about a 8 ft. cord with bare wires at the end of it.

Question:
Can I create an extension cord to connect directly to the dryer receptacle and the 220V tools? Or possibly solder / splice a 220V/30A dryer plug to the existing tool cords?

Situation cont.:
I have other tools (drill press, band saw, compressor, router, miter saw, etc) that I would like to run in the attached garage also. It sounds like I should add at least one 220V circuit and possibly 110V circuits as well but am not ready to tackle that yet.

I read some of the workshop posts about adding sub-panels etc. but am not really sure what I need to do for my situation.

Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Ed

YOur planer probalby needs its own disconnect.
I would take the 240v dryer outlet and convert it into a sub panel. IThis will only work if the dryer cable is 4 wire cable. You need 2 hots, neutral and ground. Then add cople of breakers for your table saw and planer. If you need more power then consider leaving the dryer outlet alone and pul a new 40 or 60a circuit into a new subpanel.
