I am in the process of adding a switch which will control 4 new lights in my basement. I'm running the power to it from a nearby outlet. I also want to add another outlet which is past the switch. Is it ok to run power to the switch from the outlet, and then use that power to also power another receptacle down the line. I've made sure the box I have for the switch will accomodate the wires properly. Thanks I really appreciate all of the good help you give on this forum.

Yes... but please, please, please do it in pigtail fashion (with a wire nut). Don't make the mistake that many homeowners and farmers do by putting two or three wires under the screw on the side of the switch. Big time no-no.

MD, have you found that farmers generally don't like pigtails? Or are you just picking on those hardworking folks?

No, not picking. I just chose the two biggest groups of offenders in my experience. There's an expression (possible a local expression). It is used when something is done completely unsafely, with the wrong materials, violated all applicable codes, and yet STILL FUNCTIONS. The expression is "A Farm Rigging" or "That's how they do it on the farm". Nothing against farmers. Most of my family (Mennonite folks) are farmers.

Md, I'm offended!! My grandfather (farmer all his life) was a master at multiple wires and the use of electrical tape to keep the wires under the screws. I remember as a young boy (that was a while ago) watching him unwind several feet of tape only to add another wire to a screw and yep rewrap the tape. Should add please dont try this at home. You wouldnt make very good politician because you just lost the rural vote......RL :D
