While renovating our office, we found a number of abandoned wires in the walls (woven shield and NM-B), and some without wirenuts in boxes. It was possible with a continuity tester to trace and remove some of these, but others remain a mystery. None have power. Is this ok? Must a J-box be placed at each location to terminate these abandoned wires?

Wires inside walls not connected to anything and not inside a box with power in that same box whether connected or not to these wires is not a violation.

Any wire that you can not confirm where the other end of that wire goes to should be tailed off inside a box with a cover always accessible. Any box that has a wire stored inside that box where power is present in that box should have a box contain the other end that wire inside a box also.

Good Luck

Once found an 1880 era 1/2 penney in a customer's wall !! Gave it to the owner. Cost of integrity I guess.

Also found so and so loves so and so written on old studs 100 years old or older. Guess we never change in some areas. Ha Ha.
