Hi
I have a cap cod home in the mid west. I’m remodeling the basement and have taken up the old floor tiles. The tiles were asbestos tiles but they were so old most of them were coming up in one piece anyway. I am putting a new sheet vinyl floor in. The basement floor has some of the old black glue. I wanted to know if the glue has asbestos in it also. I have looked on the intranet for information, but not much is written about the glue. I know the most dangerous part of asbestos is the fibers that become airborne. Does anyone know about the glue that holds the tiles. I need to scrape the floor and get up some of the old glue. What would be the best way to get rid of the old glue from the concrete floor?

To my knowledge the glue did not use asbestos material. You should be fine and you are correct about the dust of that material being the hazard. The glue can be a variety of material some can be removed by chemical flooding but some may have to be ground off. Take a picture of the glue you have and go you your local flooring supplier and ask for suggestions. Could be a hardened glue or a petroleum type glue. They should be able to help you after seeing the pictures.

Good Luck
