We just bought a new range but the cord for our 220 outlet gets in the way and the range can't be close to the wall - it's about 3 1/2 inches away from it. What's the best way to remedy this - would it be difficult to change the outlet so it is recessed? Changing the box so it is sideways instead of up and down could solve the problem but it doesn't look like we we have enough slack in the wiring to allow this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One way would be to install receptacle on floor, sliding stove over the top and plugging in by way of drawer below. This would depend if existing wiring comes from below and you have access to it from below. You(power OFF) could then loosen cabling and reroute backdown and install where clearance availble below range and use surface mounted receptacle. This would depend on how your wired up now!Pipe/romex&length. Sure there are no recessed area's on back of range that would accept range cord head, if you moved receptacle to different location on wall?? Assume you have flush mounted receptacle in wall now? I quess you could do as your asking if last resort! Clearance key here, and hard to make that call without seeing? Gl2U

Thanks for the quick reply. The box is not flush to the wall now; it is attached outside the drywall. It seems that recessing it so that it is flush may be the best solution. What kind of box etc. do we need to purchase to do this? Again, thanks for your help!

Quess I somewhat read you wrong and thought your now surface mounted receptacle was a flush mount, still not giving you room needed. You would need to mention how outlet is wired now? is recept surface mounted with conduit coming thru floor exposed? Is surface mounted recpt fed with Romex from inside wall and just receptacle exposed on wall? If cable? you can I recommend 2 /3" deep cut in boxes with a 3/4" ko. Determine (power OFF) if and how cable runs in wall. Then (IF Workable)cut in boxes now knowing how much slack you have, to work with for new location. You have set recpt either way your asking up down or Left to right. Hope this helps. GL2U
