Anytime you add an additional Plug or light (hard wired) to your home. Do you have to have it inspected? I tell people to pull a homeowners permit if they want any electrical work done so it can be covered under their insurance. But is it really necessary? :)

Some jurisdictions consider adding just one circuit or just one plug as minor repair or too small to consider, especially in larger cities. Doubt you will get an inspector out to see an added receptacle in the capital of a state such as Indianapolis.
Bad new is that if that one receptacle is wired wrong it could case a melt down or shock hazard as well as installing a new service, risk is still the same if done wrong. Many don't know they don't know and are happy if it works then must be alright.
Smaller jurisdicitons often state in the rules in the integrity of the original wiring is changed then a permit is required. Changing light fixture or receptacle or switch or breaker as a certain component of a circuit would normally be considered as minor repair.
Hope this helps
