Not sure if this is the right forum section for this or not.

My Grandmothers Chain glide Garage door opener lift won't respond, The light comes on, the door itself is free moving, But the engine I guess just won't move it just clicks, when the opener button is pressed.
By clicks it sound like a car when the battery is dead. My guess is the engine is fried, the unit is fourteen years old

its a Genie Model CH 125

And if it is fried is it easy to get and install a replacement lift unit

thanks

Take a ladder and climb up and look on top of the door opener above the motor. If the motor is running good chance the chain has jumped off the gear on top of the motor.

Be sure to unplug your door opener.

Be sure the door is down and the door opener is in the down postiion on its rotation and then reinstall the chain. Most often the chain will have to be loosened to reinstall.

If the chain did jump off most likely there is a reason. Check to make sure the travel stops are still clipped on the chain that trips the travel switch limits properly. Should be two of them clipped on the chain. Also check to see if the down pressure clutch is not too tight. If the chain jumped often times the clutch failed to release as it is designed to do.

I suspect one of the travel limit clips popped off and the clutch did not release or reverse the travel and the door opener forced the chain off the gear because nothing else would give.

Let us know if the motor is or is not running and if the above helps

Good Luck

Wg

thanks for replying

I'll check out what you 've suggested tomorrow when I get there, As far as the motor running I can't say weather it is or not I didn't hear any motor movement sounds other then the clicking which I suppose could be the motor.
The chain did not appear to be in a bind the bar that protudes from the bottom that attaches to the gear on top seem to rotate freely with me turning it by hand. I'll check it more throughly tomorrow

thanks again

I am having a similar problem like Newguy. My garage door will open just fine with the remote. When I attempt to close by remote I get the light flashing and the same clicking sound Newguy mentioned. Like a car battery clicking. I also have a switch mounted in my garage that I can just touch once to close or open the garage door. The strange part is that, if I hold down the garage switch the door closes fine. No clicking, but still won't close remotely. I must hold the switch down in the garage or the door will immediately open. I have looked at the top of the opener. I didn't see that the chain was off track.
I have a Craftsman 1/2 It was installed by the previous owner in 2000. Any suggestions? Thanks

Look for a lock button on your wall mounted controller. A door will behave like that when its locked out from the remotes.

It will also do that when there is a obstruction in your optical path. Check your sensors.. one should have a light thats always on, the other has a light that comes on when the path is free.. if that one is off. check alighment of the other one.. it needs to be pointed right at the other sensor for it to work. Also make sure that there isnt a bug nest on one of the sensor eyes... Sometimes the lens is set back to keep it clean and shield it from light... perfect bug house.

Wow digging up an ancient thread!

I had a problem recently with my garage door opener where it wouldn't close with the remote, but would if the wired button was held down. The problem was that the morning sun was directly shining on the optical sensor, preventing it from "seeing" the signal sent from the transmitter. Standing in a way so as to shadow the sensor from sunlight made it work with the remote again. I switched them around, so now the sun shines on the transmitter instead of the receiver. If it only goes down when the button is held, it generally means it thinks there is an obstruction.

Thank you, Mr. T for your post on garage door openers. I went down to my garage with your post in hand and after about 1 minute located the problem. The sensor was being blocked by my ladder. Just when I was ready to hire a contractor ... you saved me!;)
