Wg, my neighbor has a split level house with the utility room on the living level (upstairs) hallway. Problem is her dryer is vented to the attic with the old vinyl flex hose. This is an 8 foot vertical rise immediately after leaving the dryer. The utility room sits pretty much center of house. Seems my options are to go through the floor to a joist run then out to an outside wall using proper vent pipe not vinyl or one of the self contained water filled vent traps when venting isnt possible. The lower level is finished so dont have access to underneath side of joists, other than that, fairly unobsructed. Is there any other options available or any "tricks of the trade" to avoid cutting out the drywall to run the vent pipe to the outside wall? Not sure what, if anything, lies hidden in the joist run without removing drywall. Total run from dryer to outside wall is about ten feet. What type vent pipe would you use? Need to correct this fire waiting to happen. RL......

Hi,
I'm not WG...but my 14 cents worth anyway

Terminates in the attic?...if yes = nono!
8 foot up is ok, as long as the runs plus elbows do not exceed the recommened vent length.

You might be able to go up and out the soffit...

Solid metal is the best choice.

Thanks Jeff, Your experience in your answer to my problem was well worth 14 cents, who do I send it to? I thought 8 ft rise was unacceptable but see now from your charts that I was misin-formed. The existing vent was terminated in the attic just a few feet after coming through the ceiling. Looks like I dont have to worry about the drywall anymore. It will be fairly easy to do the vent to the attic soffit as shown in your information. Im thinking two maybe three 90's in the vent run. Thanks much.....RL :D
