Hi everyone, this is a great site and I can't say how much I have learned from here.
My neighbor is doing addition and his new septic system is too close (maybe over) my waterline. We are sharing the waterline from the main and mine is going through his land to my lot. I do have easement to that waterline. What is the best way to deal with this and best prodedure to follow?
Thanks, I appreciate.[/code]

The septic won't harm your waterline. The only problem may be that he goes over top of the line and you will have problem if you need to dig it up which is very rare.

In my state of Kentucky the codes state that no less than five feet can the house sewer line be to the water service with undisturbed ground between the two.

If this is plastic piping being used for this service, I would be concerned for possible contamination down the road if the septic system fails or leaks.

Plastic has a tendency to absorb chemicals and strong contaminants directly through the product itself even if piping is not been broken or ruptured. A common disadvantage to plastic piping.

The International Plumbing Code has no minimum clearance from a water line other than that 5' Dunbar spoke of. If you have a right of way for that water line the right of way exceeds in width the minimum 5' clearance required. If any part of that septic system encroaches within 5' of that water line then you have a violation of your right of way for that water line serving your home. I suspect this water line is a city owned easement. You should be able to contact your water company with your concern to get something done but only if it encroaches within the right of way perimeter set in yours and their deads.

If the water line is further than 5 feet away you will have no recoarse to my knowledge.

Be aware that per Code rules a septic system is required to be 50 feet away from a water well but only 5 feet from a water line.

Hope this helps

thanks everyone, very useful info. The water is city or town water and the pipe is steel although I do not know how old. I believe the local code is 10' away from waterline.
