I got 2 quotes for a central AC install. I have an old compressor and air handler that needs to be replaced, all old duct work in the attic will be reused. One guy quoted $5500 after rebates for a Carrier Seer 14. He did not come out to see the existing unit. The other guy gave me a quote for a Trane system, Seer 13 with variable speed air handler that would bring it up closer to 14, high eff air cleaner, new digital prog. thermostat, plus relocating the drain and adding lights in the attic for $5500 after rebates including permit costs. I had a buddy's friend come out today and he will give me a quote next week. I live in central Jersey and I thought this seemed a little high. I thought maybe because we had such a horribly hot summer last year that these guys raised their costs.

You need to seek two or three bids from different contractors. However you need to confirm you are bidding apples for apples. When one gives different options than the other you will get confused and not be comparing bids accurately. If the second guy fits what you desire then ask for a quote with the same exact design from the other bidders. Then you know you are getting prevailing pricing. Without bidding apples for apples you are getting sales pitch only and no known comparitive pricing.

Installing heating systems vary greatly from state to state and even cities to cities. All depends on income and red tape involved.

This is a lot the same in working for a living. You could move from midwest states where you can buy an older home for say 50 k making an average of 30 k per year to California where the income is much more say 70 k a year to do the same thing. Problem people don't think of in California that same 50 K house may be 150 K there. Cost of living varies greatly even from city to city.

Sorry I couldn't help you more
