Hi

Can you advise me on replacing this switch. The terminals are burnt on two spades. Why does it heat up...

Can this switch be repaired or will I have to spend 65$

Also the wiring is rated as TW 105c. Is this important on a stove.

I bought a connector rated at 75C . I think this is wrong.

Why is it that Home Depot etc do not carry knowledge or parts. Going to an authorised outlet is expensive..

If you old switch still has the prongs sticking out where the old terminal end plugged on then you may be able to clean it up back to good metal and just replace your teminal end as I believe you are thinking. The wire temp rating is due to the excessive heat of your appliance. The temp rating of a wire is the ambient temperature of its surrounding area. The 75 degree terminal ends are all you are going to find in this type terminal end design. You have no other choice but to match the connection design of that switch.

If your spade is burnt away then you will have to replace the switch.

The reason your wire terminal failed was due to loose connection creating the heat due to resistance of current flow in that connection not due to the temperature of the stove or oven.

Hope this helps

Thanks Wg

I noticed after a couple of days that the connector outer sheath (PVC) is getting browner..

I think the switch is causing this, the terminal seems to be sell connected to the spade.

I noticed another type of terminal from the same company (GB in canada), rated at 105c but using nylon covers... Any feelings about this.. I still suspect the terminal is causing the spade to oxidate... I did clean them they were black but I was able to get the brass again, and the terminal fits snug..

Am I risking a fire??

Thanks

Andrew

After you cleaned the spade connected to the switch you should have replaced the terminal on the end of that wire heating up. Cut the wire back to new area and install a new terminal end then plug the new terminal end onto the cleaned up spade.

The switch is contained inside the console of your range and you should be fine.

Once you restore a good connection best you can you should find the heating to be corrected. The heating and discoloring you see is due to a loose connection. REsistant heat produced by electricity [electric heating elements] are hard on connections as you discribe. This is not uncommon.

Problem is the heating may be caused by a bad set of points inside the switch. Fastest way to tell is clean the connection cut back to new wire area install new terminal end on the wire. Test if heating continues then you may have to replace your switch.
