I just purchased a chandelier to replace our old, hard wired one in our dining room. It turns out that, instead of black, white, and ground wires, it has a cord with a plug and a separate ground wire. Can I just clip and strip the wire with the plug and attach them to the black and white wires in the box and attach the separate ground wire to the ground wire in the box?

Also, there are no marks on the new chandelier cord to differentiate between them. How can I determine which wire should be connected to the black and white wires in the box? Thanks for all your help.

Possibly this fixture was a floor display(possibly). You can remove cord cap and hard wire. some times one wire has a slight rib, try looking at cord cap before removing and thinner blade would be hot. Or if you have a continuity testor test between 1 wire and socket shell and make that determinatin and ID. GL2U
