What does SCH 40 and SCH 30 stand for?
What do you recommend to use for Hot water, cold water, and sewage piping?

Sch 40 is often found in plumbing pipe colored white used for drain pipes and vent pipes. CPVC schedule 40 and 80 is required for pressurized water piping if using PVC water supply lines. PVC DWV sch 40 white plastic pipe is allowed for drain pipes. To my knowledge Sch 30 PVC is not a recognized PVC pipe thickness allowed in a dwelling per the IRC rules.
Hope this helps

I have Sch 30 drain pipes in my 4-yr old home on all drains with 3" lines (toilets and main drain).
I think Sch 30 is only made in 3" and larger sizes. The walls aren't as thick as Sch 40, but if there is no risk of physically abusing the pipe, and it is not exposed to sunlight, it's going to last a very long time, just as Sch 40 would.

The IRC does not recognize drain pipes less that schedule 40 that I know of. Where are you finding in the International Residential Code that sch 30 is approved inside a home for drain pipes? I might be learing something here.
Curious

I'm not referring to any code, but rather that my house was recently built with Sch 30, and it passed inspection. Our local Home Depot also sells Sch 30 piping (3" and 4" sizes) and Sch 30 fittings. From that small amount of information, I infer that Sch 30 is allowed in my location.

Schedule 30 is not listed as an approved product for waste pipes. I would check you local rule adoption. May be allowed by a local rule. May be a building code is locally written all together in your area instead of any normal Code books. We can only work with what is normally accepted being the IRC and the NEC. YOu may be right there are some States that have their own Codes.
Good Luck
