Hi!
My problem began when a friend installed modem connections upstairs. The second line connection is located downstairs for an older computer's modem. The original connecting plate did not have modern-day terminals, and I had trouble maintaining that connection. My new, upstairs connections work, as does my upstairs computer.
I gave up trying to reconnect the wiring to the older connector, and rewired and connected to a four wire terminal connector plate. I could not get the downstairs, older computer's modem to work, nor the phone also hookded inline. I disconnected my computer wiring and tested the phone. The phone did not have a dial tone, but did function with the upstairs second line connections.
ANY IDEAS???

REcheck the color matching of the wires at each terminal connection at both upstairs and downstairs. Look for a broken wire or colors not matching to colors on the plate as designed.

Sometimes you have a phone cable that does not match color. Then you have to go to the jack where it works. Mark down the colors to what plate color marked then match it on second newly installed jack.

If this fails then start checking for a damaged or broken wire between the two jacks.

Sometimes people use the wrong type adapter to convert to one type connection such as four round prongs to a modular plug or one modular plug to dual modular plugs. Make sure you are using the proper adapter for the job being done.

Hope this helps
