No Hot Water

Have cold water except my hot water is giving me a problem. I don't know if my water tank is at fault or if my pipe to the hot water is frozen. Can you instruct me on how to solve this problem? Thanks!

Is this a gas fired water heater or an electric?
When you run the hot water is the tank being resupplied by the cold water inlet. You can check this by looking at the water meter and see if it is moving while you run the hot water.
If you have a well you should here your pump kick on.

Make sure you have electric to the heater or if it is gas make sure the pilot is light .
If it is a problem with the water heater it could be an element(electric) or something a simple as a thermocoupler (gas)

You should be able to pull your tab on your pressure relief valve and if water sprays out then you have pressure to your tank. If you have pressure to your tank then follow the piping to the nearest outlet of hot water and try that and see if hot water flows.

If you find no spray from the pressure relief valve then good chance you have frozen pipes. If you have pressure at the hot water heater pressure relief valve but no water flow on the hot water side of the nearest faucet then you still may have frozen piping.

Part of your home may be frozen yet part still working. Check all hot water spigots or faucets and the pressure relief valve.

If you suspect frozen piping then follow you water pipes from where you lost water pressure back towards its heater or the heater water source. Look for frost on the pipes. If you find frost then chances are you found the frozen pipes.

If you have frozen piping catalog where the frozen pipes are located in your home and tell us what type piping you have.

Be careful often times frozen pipes means busted pipes that when they thaw will flood your home.

Tell us what you find and type of piping then we can advise how to thaw the piping.
