I'm getting ready to build new house and thinking of using a corn stove as supplimental heat in the basement. Does anyone have experience with this type of stove. I have easy access to all the corn I want. Would like to know some advantages/disadvantages. Thanks[/quote]

If you ever grew up with a coal fed furnace with a blower you have the same principle of a corn heating unit.

Some burn the entire corn on cob and some burn cob only and some burn shelled corn. Any one will take forced air blowers to stoke the fire to retain an even burn of the corn.

If corn is cooked much like the boot leggers used to do with white lightening booze then a by product is an additive to make gasahol. this too can be controlled and burned in the furnace and you can feed the hogs with the rest of the byproduct minus the corn booze of coarse, or you would have some very happy hogs.

Years ago no that we are on the subject they use to use follow up hogs to eat the undigested corn fed to the cattle kept in the same lot. Kind of like recycling in the feed lot.

Same principle of the above alternative heatins sytems is used when burning used motor oil or used tires. Used tires uses much more forced air stoking of the fire plus a reburner of the exhaust to lower hydrocarbins in the smoke to an acceptable level. This reburner is fed by an alternative fuel also stoked by forced are to reburn the exhaust of the tires.

Just some ideas on alternative heating.

Don't forget dried cow manure chips also will burn, ha ha. Now that inovative ?

Just having fun while trying to answer your questions at the same time.

Good Luck
