Are there any electrical considerations for replacing a single oven with a double oven?

I realize this may be a very general question, but I'm just looking for a starting point. What types of things should I consider?

A single oven is rated per Table 220.19 @ 7 Kw.

A double oven is rated per Table 220.19 @ 11 Kw.

11000 / 240 volt = 46 amp = 6 awg copper on 50 or 60 amp double pole 240 volt breaker with a black, red, white, bare and an accessible junction box [not readily accessible but assessible].

7000 / 240 volt = 29 amp = 10 awg copper on 40 amp double pole 240 volt breaker with a black, red, white, bare and an accessible junction box [not readily accessible but assessible].

Hope this helps

So if I've currenlty got a 40 amp double pole breaker in the panel (and 10AWG copper), I would need to run a new 6AWG copper and install a new breaker? :?:

If so, this is good to know because it is going to cost more than just the cost of the double-oven.

Check your manufacturer's installation instructions. Check what those instructions require as minimum ampacity rating of your branch circuit serving that double oven. If the manufacturer states less than the 6 awg wire then you may follow the manufacturer's instructions per NEC article 210.19. Worth checking but doubt you will gain much less than needing an 8 awg copper. The NEC calls for 40 amp minimum branch circuit rating with 8 awg copper per NEC 210.19.A.3.

If you haven't bought the appliance then go to the store and ask to see the manufacuturer's installation instructions and look up what the manufacturer calls for concerning that certain double oven minimum branch circuit ampacity rating.

Good Luck
