What is the max. number of wires I can butt-splice? Our home currently has 4 spliced in on connector and I want to add 4 more...

It depends on what you are using for splicing. Preferably, if not using a junction box that is weatherproof (hopefully), 3M makes weatherproof products that do this for you. They are called UR and UY connectors. Other manufacturers exist, you can find them at Lowes or Home Depot, made by Ideal Industries. The UR connectors splice three phone outlets and the UY splice two outlets.

Alarm companies and alarm installers use what we call "Dolphins", where you strip approximately 1/4"-1/2" of the Red/Green pair and twist together basically however many outlets you want to splice together. I havent seen weatherproofed ones yet in the field, but they do exist.

It is in your best interest to weatherproof the connections, if the splice will be exposed to the elements. Water will work its magic on IW and will create one nasty short.

Most phone companies will charge out the ying if you dont have a wire plan of some sorts. If you see phone techs in your neighborhood, ask to see examples of the Scotchlocks (UR & UY). Sometimes if you sweet talk them, they'll pony up a few freebies, as it sounds as if your application will only need four or six at the most.

Thanks for the reply!

Actually, the existing four lines are connected on a Dolphin connector. I figured I'd get a butt connector (those plastic jobbies with metal), put my 8 lines in, crimp it and go. It's inside the house.

Egads!!!!Be very careful with the butt splices.......If you want a more reliable connection, I would even recommend a 110 block. It is very easy to work with and since your indoors, it will look very "pretty". If you are looking to get it done, use the butt splices. Just remember they are there, J.I.C.
