I hear a local AM radio station on 3 of my 4 phones. It is so noticable that the other person on the line can hear it too. I put on a dsl line filter but it doesnt help. What can I do?

This is the very set of articles that I am currently working on , it will be a whole new section of the homewiringandmore site on the subject of interference, likely about 8 articles, including telephone interference.

I may not be able to give a detailed answer until sunday on this, as I am tied up for the next day. In the meantime a couple of questions...

Is this a new problem ? The one telephone that is not being affected what type of phone is it and where in the house is it ? WHere are the other 2 phones ? Any work done in the house recently. How long has this been happening ?

First sorry about the delay in answerng.

I would like to start by having answer some question and then I will ask you to do a few beginning steps.

First questions:

1. When did it start.
2. Was there any work done in the house since the last time you did not have a problem to the first time you heard the radio station on the phone. Don;t miss anything hear, like extension cord replacement, phone moved around, new wiring, etc.
3. The phone that you do not hear the radio station on, what kind of phone is it ? The phones that you hear the radio station on, what kind of phone are those.
4. Location of the room (1st, 2nd basement floor) of each of the 4 phones, indicate which one is teh phone that does not pick up the interference ?
5. The radio station position on the dial, in other words - transmit frequency of the radio station, am or fm ? This radio station I assume has been transmitting for years , correct ?
6. Is the phone wire in the basement being used to hang clothes on (don't laugh - I've seen it happen) ?
7. Any new appliances or electronics been purchased around the time of the start of this interference ?

Next first things to do, remember exactly where the phones are located now, unplug all the phones, and I do mean all (don't miss any of them), including answering machines, and disconnect all extension cords from the phone jacks. Go around to each of your telephone jacks in the house , and plug in each telephone , one at a time into each jack and see if you hear the radio station, make notes, you may want to temporarly label each telephone if they all look alike. We want to know for example phone 1 and 3 at kitchen jack -hear radio), phone 2 - no radio at kitchen jack.

Report back with all the details.

I want to try and get some data, for example if certain phone pick it regardless of location, or all phones pick up interference depending on location. Do not use any telephone extension cords in comiling this info, only the cord on the phone itself.

Usually the most likely cause of your "extra" radio is one of the phones. It doesn't have to be the one you're using when you hear. I would disconnect all of the phones in the house, and then plug them in one by one. Bad wiring could cause this, but it's not as likely.

Make sure you phone system is connected to the ground rod at your debark box outside where the phone company comes in also.

Yes check the ground at the debark box. The long message I left before will help narrow down the cause and rule in or rule out equipment (phones, etc) as the pick up source.

Ya, I know I am the new guy to the forum. The cable company I work for has residential and business telephony. Working on phones is my main "groove". We deal with AM and CB interference all the time.

Common causes are customer owned equipment (mostly--#1 cause), grounding issues, and inferior wires--w/o proper (if any) shiedling.

Other wacky issues we have run into is our plant ground having issues due to damage.

An open question to all the electricians/hobbyists out there.........We have some headend transmission guys that have EE (electrical engineering) degrees. Some pretty sharp cookies, these folks have met us "field weenies" at troublesome calls, and they keep talking about removing the potential differnce inherent to old POTS wire and even the newer CAT(x) wiring.

It is pretty neat to be able to twist the exposed wire (out of jacket) to match its twist from the factory and see how much of the ingress is removed.

We had one house where the architechure of the house and cable routing created a harmonic of the transmission frequency of a particular AM frequency. The subscribers phones were trashed, at all times it sounded like you were on hold with some kind of horrible Radio Disney show--Egads!!!

Best Regards,
