I want to install 4 additional lights in my basement. I want these to be on a different switch then the one I have now. The current switch opens all lights in all the basement rooms. The new switch would only operate the lights in one room. What is the best way to set this up. I know I have to tie into power somewhere, I was thinking of using one of the closest outlets. Should I run power from the outlet to the lights and then the switch, or run power to the switch and then the lights? I will appreciate any help you can provide. thank you.

YOu are allowed to do either. My choice would be to tap power from your receptacle then run to the switch. Then run a cable from the switch to the first light then to the next light from the first light and etc. light to light. Wire nut the two whites together and fold into switch box, wire nut the two bare wires with a 6" pigtail to connect to the switch divice and fold into the box. Connect the two black wires to the two brass screws of hte switch. Connect the bare 6" pitail wire to the green screw of the switch. At the light boxes connect all blacks to black and all whites to white and all bares to bare and green wires or screws.
Good Luck
