I purchased an industrial welder that runs on 30 - 55 amps. Can I purchase a dryer plug and plug the welder into the dryer outlet? If that's not possible, what do I need to do in order to operate the welder without having circut breaker problems?

Buy a 60 amp breaker double pole 240 volt rated. Buy an SE cable that is black, red, bare inside that SE cable. Then buy a surface mount welder plug.
Connect the red and black of the SE cable to the 60 amp breaker and the bare to the grounding bar in your panel. Then run your SE cable in the attic and walls to the point where you want to plug in your welder. Then install your 50 amp welder plug. Match the welder plug on the welder to the same type 50 amp welder plug you put on the wall. You need no white neutral on this welder it does not use it.
Hope this helps

What type of electrical connection is on the end of the wire from the welder now. I don't believe there are any dryer receptacles rated for that high of current. A 55A welder will require a large circuit breaker and wire. What information is on the unit's nameplate.
