Hello, First post here.
Old electric range is broken (not self-cleaning). Bought new electric range (self-cleaning). Electrician friend told me I may have to run new wire and replace breaker for range.

Currently have 40AMP breaker and 8/3 wire running to range. Do I need to upgrade???
Not sure if this is important but I live in New York.

Thanks in Advance,

LRF

The NEC recognizes two existing branch circuits that can serve a new electric range.

You must have a 8 or 6 awg copper branch circuit with a black, white, red conductor in a metallic sheath or conduit.

or

You must have an 8 or 6 awg copper branch circuit that is a nonmetallic sheathed cable that is with a black, red, and bare wire in that cable.

If I remember right much of New York requires conduit and not nonmetallic sheathed cable. If this is true then you may use the metal conduit if not a flexible metallic cable that contains a black, red, and white wire in that conduit.

Now if you have one of the above then tell us which branch circuit you have and then I can tell you how to adapt your new range to be able to be served by your existing range branch circuit.
