I have built a new detached garage. I want to run gas from the house for heat. What are the requirements for runnging gas lines; How deep and how far away from the under ground electrical lines. Are there any conditions in regards to how I come through the wall?

I believe if you run black rigid threaded pipe you may bury 8" deep.

If you install yellow plastic gas line it is 30" deep.

The clearance between electric lines and gas lines is no limit how close as long as you are not dealing with a mixture of a gas connection or outlet for gas and any electrical panel that opens such as a subpanel.

Gas feeder and electric feeder can be in same trench as close as 6" from each other.

The black rigid theaded gas pipe may pass through masonry with no protection. The yellow plastic must be protected by a sleaving to avoid abrassion or sharp edges.

I would run a minimum of 1/2" gas line just for future gas loads that may be needed and adequate gas supply to your detached garage.

Hope this helps

I'm not well versed on plumbing codes, but here's my 2 cents worth anyway. I don't think buried black pipe is permissible anymore. I'm pretty sure it must have a factory applied jacket[plastic]. Min. depth 12 in. Approved plastic pipe must have a #18 AWG wire installed with it to facilitate future attempts to locate it. Best bet is to check local plumbing codes.
Also note , most areas REQUIRE a mercury column leak test.
Remember , gas is explosive! If you blow up your house , and survive, your home owners ins. may not cover you without a CO.

Sorry I missed this question concerning using black rigid piping for gas lines. The following is a copied section of hte IRC [international Residential Code] that should help show this piping is still allowed to be used in gas installations

G2413.4( 403.4) Metallic pipe. Metallic pipe shall comply with Sections G2413.4.1 and G2413.4.2. G2413.4.1( 403.4.1) Cast iron.Cast- iron pipe shall not be used. G2413.4.2(403.4.2)Steel. Steelandwrought- iron pipe shall be at least of standardweight( Schedule 40) and shall comply with one of the following: 1. ASME B36.10, 10M; or 2. ASTM A 53; or 3. ASTM A 106.

Hope this helps
