Well, today I put up some conduit and ran 4 pr cable from the demarc to a central point and then to a roomjack. Much to my suprise, it worked on the first try.
But I don't know if I actually have it wired right.
The phone company's wires are both black as they come from the pole into the demarc box. They each attach to a stud/nut and the wires from the house attach to them. I connected (what would be) the red (white w/blue) to one and the green (blue w/white) to the other. Since both wires from the pole are black, I'm not sure if I connected my red/green wires to the right wires from the pole.
I read that polarity needs to be correct or damage can happen to some phone equipment. How can I tell if I have the polarity right?
What color is positive and which is negitive?
Thanks

http://www.telus.com/downloads/wiring_guide.pdf

This is an excellent help document concerning telephone wiring, it even tells you how to check for incorrect polarity towards the end of the document. It is in pdf format , so you will need adobe acrobat reader on your computer which can be gotten for free at the adobe site.

Let us know if this answers your questions...

it seems that i have it right. According to that pdf, if I had a dial tone, but buttons didn't work, then I should swap the two wires. I'm assuming that since my modem dialed out ok, then I must have it right. I'll check the phone next.
Thanks

make sure you check out the regular phones also, the modem is powered from the computer and may or may not put put out touch tones regardless of polarity. Your regular phones get powered from tehphone line.

Most phones don't care about polarity, and all modems don't. They can work either way. I've actually never encountered a phone that needed the correct polarity. But the easiest way is to use a digital voltmeter. If you have it connected backwards you'll get a negative voltage.
Regarding your phone co's wire, one of them will have a little ridge on the side.

I have come across phones that do care about polarity , it depends on the phone. Usually if the phone is sensitive to polarity it is the touch tone buttons that fail to work if the wrong polarity. I find that the older basic phone companies touch tone phone are more likely to care about polarity than others.
